The New Jersey state flag is the state's coat of arms centered on a buff colored field and adopted in 1896. The buff colored field represents the colors of George Washington's uniform. The state coat of arms features a shield with three plows with a forward-facing helmet and a horse head above it. These symbolize New Jersey governs itself. Two women support the shield, Liberty on the left holding a liberty cap on her staff, and Agriculture on the right holding an overflowing cornucopia. A ribbon flows from both their feet which reads "Liberty and Prosperity 1776" (1776 is the year New Jersey became a state.) The plows represent New Jersey's tradition of agriculture.
